Additions (available
May 2004)
The automated addition of liquid reagents into a reactor from a
pump is a very common process. Classically, this is performed either
volumetrically from a calibrated syringe or gravimetrically from
a pump and balance combination. The first planned Lara™ module
is an automated additions unit to compliment the Lara™ core
system.
Where appropriate, the functionality of the Lara
modules can also be achieved using third party equipment. Please
contact our technical support team for assistance.

Crystallisation
Crystallisation is a common process by which products are isolated
or purified. The size and size distribution of crystals can be very
important and needs to carefully identified and controlled. To address
this important area of process scale-up and development a Lara™
crystallisation sensor based on turbidity measurement is planned.
Where appropriate, the functionality of the Lara
modules can also be achieved using third party equipment. Please

Liquid-liquid
extraction
Liquid-liquid extraction is a work-up procedure used to recover
products from reactions. The separation process takes advantage
of the relative solubilities of solutes in immiscible solvents.
Liquid-liquid extraction is very common where separations involve
multiple components or where separation by distillation is ineffective
or not practical. In adopting the liquid interface sensor approach
a Lara™ liquid-liquid extraction module is planned for the
future.
Where appropriate, the functionality of the Lara
modules can also be achieved using third party equipment. Please
contact our technical support team for assistance.

Automated
sampling
Taking samples from a reaction at user defined time points in a
chemical process allows the elucidation of important kinetic and
mechanistic information and provides an instant snap shot of the
current state of the process. Sampling can be performed either manually
or with an automated system that removes samples at user defined
time points often with on-line HPLC. This second approach offer
some clear benefits in terms of unattended operation and will be
developed as a module for the Lara™ unit in the near future.
Where appropriate, the functionality of the Lara
modules can also be achieved using third party equipment. Please
contact our technical support team for assistance.

Fractionation
Fractionation is a commonly used method of separation. It is often
employed to investigate processes such as solvent recovery or recycling,
mass balance and reflux studies. The facility to perform and control
fractionation with Lara™ is planned for the future.
Where appropriate, the functionality of the Lara
modules can also be achieved using third party equipment. Please
contact our technical support team for assistance.
